May: What does it mean to bear testimony?

All Printables, Videos, and Handouts found HERE

1. Introduction
  • Have the class close their eyes and imagine that they have invited a non-member friend or family member to church on Fast Sunday. We have partaken of the sacrament and the bishop turns the time over to the congregation to bear their testimonies. Your friend or family member leans over and asks, "What does it mean to bear testimony?" How would you answer?
2. Learn Together
  • Testimony Do's and Don'ts
    • Put the two headings on the board. Pass out the articles from talks about testimonies. Have each class member share what their article teaches us about the do's and don'ts of sharing your testimony
3. Teach Others
  • Have the youth search the scriptures for an example of someone bearing their testimony. Here are a few examples:
    • 1 Nephi 3:7 - Nephi
    • Matthew 6:13-19 - Simon Peter & Jesus
    • Alma 5:45-48 - Alma the Younger
    • D&C 76:22-24 - Joseph Smith
  • Have the youth share their example and what it can teach us about bearing testimony
  • How can we bear testimony? Can it only be on Fast Sunday during sacrament meeting?
4. Making it Personal
  • Ask the class to think of a time when they were influenced by someone's testimony, whether through actions or words while they watch a video.
  • Watch "A Man without Eloquence" of Brigham Young's experience of being touched by someone else's testimony.
  • Allow youth to share their experiences
5. Conclusion
  • Pass out the index cards and have the youth write down their answer to the question you asked at the beginning of class "What does it mean to bear testimony?"
